The incident, which occurred on the evening of May 23, 2025, along Painter Lick Lane in Columbia Township, has sparked renewed conversations about ATV safety and the fragility of life.
According to a Pennsylvania State Police report, the crash took place at approximately 8:13 p.m. when Fleming, a former wide receiver for Jae State and Penn State, was operating a 2024 Yamaha ATV with Boyd as his passenger. The couple was traveling northbound on Painter Lick Lane, a rural road near the New York state line, when a deer suddenly darted into their path, causing a catastrophic collision. Neither Fleming nor Boyd was wearing safety equipment, such as helmets, at the time of the accident, which likely exacerbated the severity of their injuries.
Alyssa Boyd, a 23-year-old from Bloomsburg and a graduate of the University of Alabama, was pronounced dead at the scene due to extensive injuries. Described by friends as a vibrant and kind-hearted individual with a passion for soccer and basketball, Boyd was a beloved figure in her community. Julian Fleming, a native of Elysburg, Pennsylvania, and a former five-star recruit from Southern Columbia High School, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Guthrie Troy Community Hospital. Reports indicate that Fleming, who was released from the hospital following treatment, is now recovering from the ordeal.
