Tragedy in Midtown Manhattan: NYPD Officer and Three Others Killed in Shooting at 345 Park Avenue

New York City, July 29, 2025 – A horrific mass shooting rocked Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening, July 28, 2025, claiming the lives of four people, including an off-duty New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer, and leaving one person critically injured. The attack unfolded at 345 Park Avenue, a prominent 44-story office tower that houses the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL), the investment giant Blackstone, and other major firms such as KPMG and Rudin Management. The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after the rampage, which sent shockwaves through one of New York City’s busiest commercial districts.

The Attack: A Timeline of Chaos

The shooting began just before 6:30 p.m. during the evening rush hour, when Tamura exited a double-parked black BMW on Park Avenue between 51st and 52nd Streets, armed with an M4 rifle and wearing body armor. Surveillance footage captured him entering the lobby of the skyscraper and immediately opening fire on off-duty NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was working a paid security detail. Tamura then shot a woman who had sought cover behind a pillar and continued to “spray” the lobby with gunfire, striking a male civilian. He proceeded to the elevator bank, where he shot a security guard hiding behind a desk. Allowing a woman to exit an elevator unharmed, Tamura then took the elevator to the 33rd floor, where he fatally shot another person before taking his own life.

The building was placed on lockdown as police conducted a floor-by-floor sweep to ensure no additional threats remained. The NYPD confirmed that Tamura acted alone, and there was no ongoing danger to the public. Emergency responders rushed the victims to nearby hospitals, with Officer Islam and a critically injured male civilian taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, and two other victims, a man and a woman, transported to Bellevue Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. A fifth victim, an NFL employee, survived but remained in critical but stable condition as of Tuesday morning.

The Victims: Lives Cut Short

Among the victims was 36-year-old NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant and three-and-a-half-year veteran of the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. Described as a hero by city officials, Islam was a father of two young boys, with a third child on the way, as his wife was eight months pregnant. He had joined the NYPD to support his family and had previously served as a peace officer in middle schools, reflecting his commitment to public service. “He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm’s way. He made the ultimate sacrifice,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Another victim was Wesley LePatner, a Senior Managing Director at Blackstone and the global head of its Core+ Real Estate business, as well as the CEO of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust. A graduate of Yale University and a former Goldman Sachs executive, LePatner was remembered as “brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected” by her colleagues. She leaves behind a husband and two children. Blackstone issued a statement expressing profound grief: “Words cannot express the devastation we feel. Wesley was a beloved member of the Blackstone family and will be sorely missed.”
