Taylor Swift Slams Trump’s “Heartless” Plan to Displace DC’s Homeless for a “More Beautiful” Capital

August 10, 2025

In a fiery public statement, pop superstar Taylor Swift has sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s recent announcement to forcibly relocate homeless individuals from Washington, DC, in an effort to make the nation’s capital “safer and more beautiful.” The 14-time Grammy winner, known for her increasing willingness to speak out on political issues, called the policy “heartless” and “a shameful prioritization of aesthetics over humanity,” sparking widespread discussion online and reigniting her ongoing feud with the 47th president.

Trump’s controversial directive, shared on his Truth Social platform on August 10, 2025, outlined plans for a White House press conference to detail a crackdown on homelessness and crime in Washington, DC. In his post, Trump declared, “The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY,” as part of an initiative to “Make the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful.” The statement, which also promised to increase law enforcement presence, drew immediate backlash from advocates for the homeless and progressive voices, with Swift’s response amplifying the criticism to a global audience.

Swift, who has a history of publicly opposing Trump’s policies, took to Instagram to address her 280 million followers, condemning the president’s plan as “cruel and out of touch.” In her post, she wrote: “Forcing vulnerable people out of their communities just to make a city look ‘prettier’ is not leadership—it’s heartless. Beauty isn’t found in sweeping away those who need help the most. It’s in compassion, action, and solutions that lift everyone up. This isn’t about making DC ‘beautiful’—it’s about ignoring the humanity of those who call it home.”

The singer’s statement referenced her own experiences with philanthropy, including her donations to organizations supporting housing and food security, and urged her fans to advocate for policies that address homelessness with empathy rather than displacement. “We need leaders who see people, not problems to be hidden,” she added, in a clear jab at Trump’s rhetoric.

Swift’s comments come at a time when her public feud with Trump has reached new heights. The president has repeatedly targeted the singer on social media, most recently in May 2025, when he claimed his earlier declaration of “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT” caused her popularity to plummet, asserting she was “no longer HOT.” These remarks followed Swift’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, a move that prompted Trump to lash out, accusing her of being “woke” and dismissing her influence. Swift’s fans, known as Swifties, rallied in her defense, flooding platforms like X with messages like “STAY AWAY FROM HER” and calling out Trump’s fixation on the singer.

The backdrop of this latest clash is Swift’s growing political activism. Once reluctant to wade into politics, Swift broke her silence in 2018 by endorsing Democratic Senate candidate Phil Bredesen in Tennessee, a decision that drew Trump’s ire when he said he liked her music “25% less.” Since then, she has been outspoken against Trump, notably criticizing his handling of Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 and his attempts to undermine the U.S. Postal Service ahead of the election that year. In her 2020 documentary Miss Americana, Swift called out Trump’s leadership style, accusing him of “gaslighting the American public” and suggesting he views governance as “an autocracy.”

Trump’s homelessness policy has also drawn criticism beyond Swift. Advocates argue that forcibly relocating homeless individuals to undisclosed “new spots” far from the city fails to address root causes like housing affordability and mental health support. Posts on X reflect public outrage, with users labeling the plan “inhumane” and accusing Trump of prioritizing optics over solutions. The policy aligns with Trump’s broader “tough on crime” stance, as he vowed to jail criminals and restore order to the capital, but critics warn it risks exacerbating the challenges faced by DC’s most vulnerable residents.

Swift’s response has not only reignited her feud with Trump but also highlighted her influence as a cultural and political force. Her 2020 call to register to vote led to a surge of over 35,000 registrations through Vote.org, and polls have shown her endorsements can sway voters, particularly among younger demographics. Political analysts suggest Swift’s decision to speak out on this issue could galvanize her fanbase to advocate for homeless rights and pressure local officials to oppose Trump’s plan.

As of now, Trump has not directly responded to Swift’s latest criticism, though his history of engaging with her on Truth Social suggests a retort may be forthcoming. Meanwhile, Swift’s fans continue to dominate online discourse, with hashtags like #SwiftiesForJustice trending on X as they amplify her call for compassion. The clash underscores the deep divide between Swift’s vision of empathetic leadership and Trump’s focus on rapid, optics-driven change, setting the stage for further tension as the 2025 political landscape unfolds.
