Serena Williams shares her experiences raising two daughters, lifts lid on emotional and extreme parenting

Tennis icon Serena Williams is opening up about the emotional realities of motherhood, revealing how raising her two daughters has become the most important and demanding chapter of her life.

Speaking during a live taping of “IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson,” Williams shared candid details about her deeply hands-on parenting style, admitting that she sometimes takes motherhood to what she called “extreme” levels. The 23-time Grand Slam champion said she has worked tirelessly to remain fully present in the lives of daughters Olympia and Adira, even while balancing fame, business ventures, and public appearances.  

Williams revealed that she never spent more than 24 hours away from her eldest daughter, Olympia, until the child was six years old — a confession that quickly sparked intense reactions online. While some praised her devotion and commitment to family life, others debated whether such an approach was overly protective. Despite the mixed reactions, Williams made it clear that her parenting decisions come from a deeply personal place.  

“I really try to be a present parent,” Williams said during the discussion, explaining that nearly every decision she makes revolves around her children and the values she wants to teach them.  

The retired tennis superstar also lifted the lid on the emotional challenges that come with discipline and setting boundaries. In a separate parenting story shared earlier this year, Williams described a heartbreaking moment when her daughter missed a sleepover after refusing to follow bedtime rules. Williams admitted the incident left both mother and daughter in tears, saying she “cried harder” while still standing firm on discipline.  

The revelations have given fans a rare glimpse into Williams’ life away from the tennis court — one focused less on championships and more on motherhood, sacrifice, and emotional growth. Since retiring from professional tennis in 2022, Williams has increasingly spoken about how becoming a mother reshaped her priorities and perspective on success.  

Williams shares both daughters with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, the entrepreneur and Reddit co-founder. The couple frequently post family moments online, though Williams has said she intentionally keeps much of her parenting journey private. Earlier this year, she described motherhood as her “favorite place to be” while sharing rare family photos from Easter celebrations.  

Her comments have resonated with many parents who understand the difficult balance between discipline, emotional attachment, and the pressure to always “get parenting right.” For Williams, however, the mission remains simple: being present for the moments that matter most.
