Gavin Newsom Condemns Trump’s Sokoto, Nigeria Strike, Warns Against Fighting Terror “With Dirty Hands”

California Governor Gavin Newsom has sharply condemned former U.S. President Donald Trump following reports of a U.S.-led airstrike in Sokoto, Nigeria, calling the action reckless, morally wrong, and damaging to America’s global standing.

In a statement that quickly gained attention across political and international circles, Newsom argued that terrorism cannot be defeated through unlawful or unilateral violence, warning that such actions risk turning counterterrorism efforts into the very thing they claim to oppose.

“Terrorists must be confronted and defeated,” Newsom said, “but it must be done with clean hands, respect for the law, and accountability. You do not fight terror by acting like another terrorist.”

Criticism Over Process and Moral Authority

Newsom’s remarks come amid growing controversy over claims that the strike was carried out without proper consultation with the U.S. Congress or transparent coordination with Nigerian authorities. Critics argue that the action bypassed established legal frameworks governing military force and undermined international norms.

According to Newsom, the lack of oversight is just as troubling as the strike itself.

“Democracies don’t launch secret attacks and call it leadership,” he said. “They build coalitions, respect sovereignty, and protect civilian life.”

International and Domestic Backlash

The Sokoto strike has sparked backlash both within the United States and abroad, with lawmakers from both parties raising concerns about executive overreach and the potential consequences for U.S.–Africa relations. Human rights advocates have also warned that such operations, when conducted without transparency, risk escalating instability rather than reducing it.

Nigeria, a key U.S. partner in regional security efforts, has faced years of complex security challenges involving extremist groups. Analysts say unilateral actions could strain diplomatic ties and complicate ongoing counterterrorism cooperation.

A Broader Political Message

Newsom’s condemnation is widely seen as part of a broader critique of Trump’s foreign policy approach, which critics describe as aggressive and dismissive of international law. By framing the strike as a moral failure as well as a strategic one, Newsom positioned himself as a defender of rules-based global order.

“America loses its moral authority when it abandons its principles,” Newsom said. “Strength without accountability is not leadership — it’s chaos.”

Calls for Accountability

As pressure mounts, several lawmakers are reportedly pushing for formal investigations into how the decision was made and whether it violated U.S. law or international agreements. Newsom echoed those calls, urging Congress to assert its constitutional role in matters of war and peace.

“The world is watching,” he warned. “How we fight terror defines who we are.”

The Trump camp has not issued a detailed response to Newsom’s comments, but allies have previously defended aggressive counterterrorism tactics as necessary for national security.

For now, the controversy continues to grow, fueling renewed debate over the limits of presidential power, the ethics of military force, and America’s role on the global stage.
