WNBA Champion Elena Delle Donne Announces Retirement After Illustrious Career, Declares ‘I Gave It My All’ to the Game She Loves

April 04, 2025 – Elena Delle Donne, one of the WNBA’s most celebrated talents and a champion with the Washington Mystics, has officially announced her retirement from professional basketball. The 35-year-old forward, known for her sharpshooting and versatility, leaves behind a legacy that has inspired fans and players alike. In an emotional statement released Friday, Delle Donne reflected on her journey, saying, “I gave it my all to the game I love, and I’m grateful for every moment.”

Delle Donne’s career spanned over a decade, marked by accolades that cement her as one of the league’s all-time greats. Drafted second overall by the Chicago Sky in 2013, she quickly rose to prominence, earning the WNBA Rookie of the Year award. Her trade to the Washington Mystics in 2017 marked a turning point, leading to an MVP season in 2019 and a championship title that same year. Despite battling injuries, including a persistent back condition, her determination never wavered.

“I’ve poured everything into this sport—my heart, my soul, my body,” Delle Donne said. “There were highs that felt like dreams and lows that tested me, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I gave it my all, and now it’s time to step away and embrace what’s next.”

Her impact extended beyond the stat sheet. Standing at 6-foot-5, Delle Donne redefined the forward position with her ability to shoot from deep and dominate in the paint. She finishes her career with two MVP awards (2015, 2019), six All-Star selections, and a career average of 19.2 points per game. Her leadership in bringing the Mystics their first championship remains a defining moment for the franchise.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert praised Delle Donne’s contributions, stating, “Elena’s skill and passion elevated our league. She’s a champion in every sense, and her presence will be missed.”

Fans took to social media to celebrate her career, with many calling her an “icon” and “trailblazer.” Delle Donne hinted at future plans, including advocacy for health awareness—stemming from her own experience with Lyme disease—and spending time with her family.

As the WNBA prepares for its next chapter, Elena Delle Donne walks away with no regrets. “This game gave me everything,” she said. “I hope I gave it something back.”
