Tennis Legend Sam Stosur Announces Second Pregnancy with Partner Liz Astling in Heartwarming Reveal

April 5, 2025 – Australian tennis icon Sam Stosur has shared a delightful update with her fans: she is expecting her second child with longtime partner Liz Astling. The 41-year-old Grand Slam champion, who retired from professional tennis in 2023, took to Instagram this week to announce the exciting news, revealing that this time, she will be the one carrying the couple’s new addition. The announcement comes four years after the birth of their first child, daughter Genevieve, affectionately known as Evie, who was born in June 2020.

Stosur, a former world No. 1 in doubles and the 2011 US Open singles champion, shared a charming video on Instagram, showing her dusting off a pram and baby capsule on her back deck. “Time to dust off the baby gear,” she wrote over the clip, captioning the post with a heartfelt message: “We’re so excited for the new addition to our family. It’s my turn this time.” The post was met with an outpouring of love and congratulations from fans, friends, and fellow tennis stars, including Todd Woodbridge, Lisa Raymond, and Nicole Bradtke.

A Growing Family and a Journey of Joy

Sam Stosur and Liz Astling, who have been together for over seven years, first became parents in 2020 when Astling gave birth to their daughter Genevieve during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, Stosur reflected on how the global pause in the WTA tour allowed her to fully embrace motherhood. “Life in lockdown during coronavirus has been challenging in many ways, but personally, it’s been one of the most exciting and happy times of my life,” she wrote on Instagram in July 2020, announcing Genevieve’s arrival. The tennis star described the experience as “absolutely incredible,” admitting that even the sleepless nights and challenges of new parenthood were overshadowed by the joy of watching her daughter grow.

The pandemic proved to be a silver lining for Stosur, who would typically have been competing at Wimbledon and the US Open during that period. Instead, she was able to attend birthing classes with Astling, prepare for the baby’s arrival, and be fully present for those early months of motherhood. After a month with her newborn, Stosur made the decision to step back from the grueling travel demands of professional tennis, prioritizing her family over her career. “I wanted to be there while the baby grew up instead of jet-setting across the world,” she later shared.

Now, with Genevieve at four years old, Stosur and Astling are preparing to welcome their second child. The announcement that Stosur will carry the baby this time adds a special layer of significance to the couple’s journey, marking a new chapter in their shared experience of parenthood.

A Storied Career on the Court

Sam Stosur’s legacy in tennis is nothing short of remarkable. She is the only Australian woman since the legendary Evonne Goolagong Cawley, more than half a century ago, to claim major titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Stosur’s career highlights include her 2011 US Open singles victory over Serena Williams, a win that made her the first Australian woman to claim a Grand Slam singles title since Goolagong’s Wimbledon triumph in 1980. She also reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 4 and made deep runs in other majors, including semifinals at the French Open in 2009, 2012, and 2016.

In doubles, Stosur was a dominant force, achieving the world No. 1 ranking in 2006 and holding it for 61
