Greta Thunberg Slams Trump’s Congress Address and Musk’s Priorities: “Focus on Real Crises, Not Distractions”

March 4, 2025 – Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg unleashed a scathing critique today, targeting both U.S. President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk following Trump’s latest address to Congress. In a fiery statement posted on X and echoed in a press conference from Stockholm, Thunberg accused Trump of fixating on “woke societies” instead of addressing urgent global crises like climate change, while urging Musk to redirect his influence toward more pressing issues rather than opposing government aid to other nations.

Trump’s address, delivered last night to a joint session of Congress, leaned heavily into cultural and ideological themes. The president railed against what he called “radical woke agendas” infiltrating American institutions, promising to “restore common sense” through new executive actions. He touted his administration’s early achievements—slashing federal regulations and empowering Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—while barely mentioning climate policy or international cooperation, topics Thunberg has long championed.

“There are more pressing issues he should focus on rather than woke societies,” Thunberg said, her voice steady but sharp. “People are dying in heatwaves, floods are wiping out homes, and ecosystems are collapsing right now. He stands there talking about culture wars like it’s a game. This is not leadership—it’s denial. How dare he waste time when the science has been clear for decades?”

Thunberg, now 22, didn’t stop at Trump. She turned her attention to Elon Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO who has emerged as a powerful figure in Trump’s administration. Musk, tasked with streamlining government spending, has recently pushed to dismantle programs like USAID, arguing that foreign aid often fuels inefficiency and corruption. His moves have sparked outrage among humanitarian groups, who warn that cuts could destabilize vulnerable regions.

“Elon should focus more on important issues rather than working against government aid to other countries,” Thunberg declared. “The world needs innovation to solve the climate crisis, not billionaires tearing down systems that save lives. He’s got the resources to change everything—why waste it fighting the wrong battles?”

The activist’s remarks come at a tense moment. Trump’s second term, just weeks old, has seen him double down on populist rhetoric, while Musk’s DOGE initiative has slashed federal jobs and programs at a breakneck pace. Critics say the duo’s approach prioritizes ideology and cost-cutting over global responsibility, a charge Thunberg amplified today.

“Trump talks about making America great, but what about the planet?” she asked. “And Musk—he builds rockets to Mars but ignores the Earth burning beneath his feet. We don’t need distractions or grandstanding. We need action, now.”

Thunberg’s words quickly lit up X, with supporters praising her clarity and detractors dismissing her as naive. One user wrote, “Greta’s right—climate’s the real fight, not this woke nonsense Trump’s obsessed with.” Another fired back, “She’s just a kid yelling at adults who actually run things. Musk’s cuts are making government work better—deal with it.”

This isn’t Thunberg’s first clash with either figure. During Trump’s first term, she famously stared him down at the United Nations in 2019 and later trolled his election fraud claims in 2020, recycling his own mocking words against him. Musk, meanwhile, has oscillated between defending her climate activism and aligning with Trump’s skepticism of government overreach, making their dynamic unpredictable.

Neither Trump nor Musk has responded directly to Thunberg’s latest broadside as of this evening. The White House issued a brief statement calling the president’s address “a bold vision for America’s future,” while Musk posted a cryptic X update: “Efficiency isn’t optional—waste kills progress.” Whether Thunberg’s call will shift their focus remains unclear, but her voice, as ever, refuses to be ignored.
