Nicolas Cage Sued by Ex Christina Fulton Over Son’s Alleged Assault: Claims of Negligence Stir Controversy

February 21, 2025

Hollywood icon Nicolas Cage finds himself at the center of a legal storm as his former partner, Christina Fulton, has filed a lawsuit against him and their son, Weston Coppola Cage, following an alleged violent incident that left her with severe injuries. The lawsuit, lodged in the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles County, paints a troubling picture of family strife, mental health struggles, and accusations of negligence that have thrust the private lives of the Cage family into the public eye.

The incident in question reportedly occurred on April 28, 2024, when Fulton, 57, claims she visited Weston, 34, at his condominium after receiving urgent messages from his friends about his deteriorating mental state. According to the lawsuit, Weston attacked her in a “manic rage,” resulting in a physical altercation that spanned multiple areas of the complex, including the parking lot, elevator, and lobby. Fulton alleges she sustained “life-threatening injuries,” including a concussion, multiple contusions, a disfiguring eye injury, dental trauma, neck and throat damage, tinnitus, abdominal trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The assault, she claims, derailed her thriving career as an actress and model, notably interrupting her work on a Netflix series and causing significant reputational and economic harm.

Fulton’s legal action doesn’t stop with her son. She is also targeting Nicolas Cage, 61, accusing the Oscar-winning actor of negligence and enabling Weston’s violent tendencies. The lawsuit asserts that Weston has a “long history of mental and psychological disorder” and a documented pattern of violent behavior, including prior assaults and substance abuse issues. Fulton alleges that Cage, fully aware of their son’s struggles, failed to intervene and instead exacerbated the situation by providing financial support, bailing Weston out of jail repeatedly, and even drinking alcohol with him despite knowing his history of substance abuse. “Nicolas knew or should have known that Weston posed a serious and imminent danger to others, including Plaintiff,” the lawsuit states, holding Cage accountable for allegedly turning a blind eye to the risks.

The fallout from the April incident saw Weston arrested in July 2024 on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, to which he pleaded not guilty. Now, with Fulton’s lawsuit, the stakes have escalated, pitting mother against son and ex-partner against ex-partner in a deeply personal and public battle. Fulton, who dated Cage from 1988 to 1991 and shares Weston (born in 1990) with him, is seeking damages for the “catastrophic physical, emotional, and economic harm” she endured, claiming her injuries required extensive medical care, surgeries, and ongoing treatment.

Cage’s legal team has swiftly responded, dismissing the allegations as baseless. “The allegations by Christina Fulton against Nicolas Cage are absurd and frivolous,” Cage’s attorney, Brian Wolf, said in a statement. “Weston Coppola is a 34-year-old man. Mr. Cage does not control Weston’s behavior in any manner and is not responsible for Weston’s alleged assault of his mother.” The defense argues that Weston, as an adult, bears sole responsibility for his actions, and that holding Cage liable stretches the bounds of legal accountability.

Weston’s legal representatives have also weighed in, suggesting the lawsuit is a “money grab and call for attention” given Fulton’s history of litigation against family members. They contend that her decision to sue her own son and his father reflects more on her motives than on the events themselves.

The case raises complex questions about parental responsibility, mental health, and the limits of liability when an adult child is involved. Fulton’s attorney, Joseph Farzam, acknowledged to the BBC that most parents aren’t accountable for their grown children’s actions, but argued that Cage’s alleged active enabling sets this situation apart. Meanwhile, the public watches as a family once united by love now faces off in court, with a backdrop of fame, fortune, and personal turmoil.

Nicolas Cage, known for films like Leaving Las Vegas and National Treasure, has yet to comment personally on the lawsuit. As the legal proceedings unfold, the world will be watching to see how this Hollywood drama resolves—and whether the Cage family can find reconciliation beyond the courtroom.
