Trump Urges Elon Musk to Get “Brutal” as DOGE Chief in Push to Slash U.S. Government

Washington, D.C. – February 22, 2025In a fiery address from the White House on Saturday, President Donald Trump called on Elon Musk, the newly appointed head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), to take a more aggressive and uncompromising stance in his mission to shrink the sprawling U.S. federal government. Speaking to a room of advisors and reporters, Trump didn’t mince words, urging the billionaire entrepreneur to wield his authority like a sledgehammer against what he described as “decades of wasteful bureaucracy.”

“Elon, it’s time to swing the axe hard and fast,” Trump declared, leaning into the podium with his signature intensity. “We didn’t bring you in to play nice. We need results—big, bold, brutal results.”

The remarks come just weeks after Musk assumed leadership of DOGE, a newly created agency tasked with identifying and eliminating inefficiencies across federal departments. The department, a brainchild of Trump’s second term, has already stirred controversy with its ambitious goal of cutting government spending by as much as 20% within two years. Musk, known for his relentless drive at Tesla and SpaceX, was tapped for the role with the promise of bringing private-sector ruthlessness to Washington.

Since taking the helm, Musk has outlined plans to audit every federal agency, digitize outdated systems, and eliminate what he calls “redundant bureaucratic fat.” However, his initial proposals—while bold—have faced pushback from career bureaucrats and congressional Democrats, who warn of disruptions to essential services. Sources close to the administration suggest Trump’s latest comments reflect frustration with the pace of progress, as well as a desire to see Musk adopt a more confrontational approach.

“We need a bulldozer, not a broom, Elon,” Trump reportedly told Musk in a private meeting earlier this week, according to an aide who spoke on condition of anonymity. The president’s public remarks echoed that sentiment, painting a vivid picture of a government “choked by its own weight” and in desperate need of a radical overhaul.

Musk, for his part, has remained characteristically enigmatic. In a post on X shortly after Trump’s speech, the DOGE chief responded with a cryptic message: “Efficiency isn’t polite. It’s physics. Buckle up.” The post, accompanied by a flame emoji, has fueled speculation about what “brutal” measures might be in store.

Critics, however, are sounding the alarm. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) called Trump’s rhetoric “reckless and dangerous,” accusing the administration of prioritizing spectacle over substance. “Telling someone like Elon Musk to go ‘brutal’ in a government that millions rely on isn’t leadership—it’s chaos,” Warren said in a statement. Meanwhile, federal employee unions have begun mobilizing, warning of potential mass layoffs and service cuts that could disproportionately harm vulnerable populations.

Supporters of the Trump-Musk partnership see it differently. “This is exactly what we voted for,” said Mark Reynolds, a conservative commentator and Trump ally. “The government’s been a bloated mess for too long. If anyone can cut through the nonsense, it’s Elon, especially with Trump lighting a fire under him.”

The call for aggression marks a pivotal moment for DOGE, which has so far operated in a planning phase. Insiders suggest Musk is preparing a “shock and awe” rollout of reforms, potentially targeting agencies like the Department of Education or the Environmental Protection Agency—longtime bête noires of the Republican base. Whether that translates to the “brutal” approach Trump envisions remains to be seen.

As the administration doubles down on its efficiency crusade, all eyes are on Musk. Will the tech titan heed Trump’s call and unleash a wrecking ball on Washington? Or will the complexities of government temper his ambitions? For now, the message from the Oval Office is clear: swing hard, or don’t swing at all.
