Larry Tamblyn, Founding Member of The Standells and Voice Behind Red Sox Anthem ‘Dirty Water,’ Passes Away at 82

The music world mourns the loss of Larry Tamblyn, a 1960s garage rock pioneer whose hit song with The Standells, “Dirty Water,” became a cultural touchstone for both punk rock and Boston sports fans. Tamblyn, also known as the brother of actor Russ Tamblyn, died on March 21, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades.

Los Angeles, CA – Larry Tamblyn, the founding member of the influential 1960s garage rock band The Standells and the creative force behind their iconic hit “Dirty Water,” passed away on Friday, March 21, 2025, at the age of 82. His nephew, Dennis Tamblyn, shared the news in a heartfelt Facebook post, reflecting on his uncle’s remarkable life and contributions to music. No cause of death has been disclosed at this time.

“My uncle Larry Tamblyn passed away today. I have very fond memories of him and his family over the years,” Dennis wrote. “He lived an incredible life. He was in a band called The Standells, whose hit song ‘Dirty Water’ is still played to this day whenever the Red Sox or the Bruins win a home game. They also played on an episode of The Munsters.” Dennis added a personal touch, recalling, “A few years ago, The Standells played at Hotel Congress here in Tucson, Ariz., and Larry stayed with me. It was so great to hang out with him and catch up. He was still making music well into his later years. You will be missed, Uncle Larry.”

A Musical Journey Rooted in Los Angeles

Born Lawrence Arnold Tamblyn on February 5, 1943, in Los Angeles, California, Larry grew up in a family steeped in entertainment. His older brother, Russ Tamblyn, became a celebrated actor and dancer, earning an Academy Award nomination for Peyton Place (1957) and starring in classics like West Side Story (1961) and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954). Larry, however, carved his own path in the music world, starting as a solo artist in the late 1950s with singles like “Dearest” and “This Is The Night” for Faro and Linda Records.

In 1962, Larry founded The Standells alongside guitarist Tony Valentino, bassist Jody Rich, and drummer Benny King. Initially known as Larry Tamblyn and The Standells, the band recorded their first 45, “You’ll Be Mine Someday/Girl In My Heart,” in 1963. After signing with Liberty Label in 1964 and shortening their name to The Standells, the group underwent lineup changes, with Dick Dodd joining as lead vocalist. It was under this configuration that they recorded their biggest hit, “Dirty Water,” in 1966—a song written by their producer Ed Cobb that would go on to define their legacy.

The Anthem That Transcended Generations

“Dirty Water” reached number 11 on the Billboard charts and became a defining track of the 1960s garage rock movement. Often described as a “punk band of the 1960s,” The Standells are credited with influencing later punk rock icons like the Sex Pistols and Ramones. The song’s raw energy and rebellious tone, paired with Dodd’s attitude-filled vocals (a creative decision Tamblyn discussed in a ClassicBands.com interview), made it a standout in an era of polished pop.

Beyond its musical impact, “Dirty Water” found a second life as a sports anthem. Since Opening Day in 1998, the song has been played at Fenway Park after every Boston Red Sox home game victory, becoming a beloved tradition for fans. The Standells even performed the song live during the Red Sox’s 2004 World Series win, which ended the team’s 86-year championship drought known as the “Curse of the Bambino.” The track is also played at Boston Bruins home games, cementing its status as a regional anthem. “Dirty Water” is listed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s “500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll,” a testament to its enduring influence.

A Career of Versatility and Longevity

The Standells’ success wasn’t limited to “Dirty Water.” They released other notable tracks like “Sometimes Good Guys Don’t Wear White” and “Why Pick on Me,” which peaked at No. 54 on the Billboard chart. Songs from this era later became punk classics, covered by bands like Minor Threat and The Cramps. The group also made their mark on television and film, appearing in low-budget movies like Get Yourself a College Girl (1964) and Riot on Sunset Strip (1967). They played the fictional band “The Love Bugs” on a 1965 episode of the Bing Crosby Show and even performed on The Munsters, as Dennis Tamblyn noted. Interestingly, the band provided incidental music for the 1963 film Follow the Boys, which starred Larry’s brother, Russ Tamblyn.

Despite never again reaching the Top 40 after “Dirty Water,” The Standells remained active through the late 1960s, with their polished production and touches of psychedelia earning them a cult following. Larry took a step back from the band in the following decades but never fully retired from music. He reformed The Standells in 2009, leading to their first national tour since the 1960s in 2014, as reported by the U.K. newspaper Metro. The band released their final album, Bump, in 2013, showcasing Larry’s dedication to his craft well into his later years.

In December 2023, Larry received a significant honor when he was inducted into the California Music Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony, held on January 13, 2024, was a family affair—his brother Russ, now 90, presented the award. Larry shared a video of his performance from that night on his Facebook page, a poignant moment that highlighted his lifelong passion for music.

A Life Remembered by Family and Neighbors

Larry Tamblyn’s passing has resonated deeply with those who knew him, both personally and through his music. A neighbor in rural Georgia, where Larry had apparently lived in recent years, shared a touching reflection on X: “My friend and neighbor, Larry Tamblyn, passed away this morning … It was totally surreal that a member of the 60s garage punk band my 80s garage band used to cover, moved just around the corner from me in rural GA.” The post underscores the unexpected connections Larry fostered, even in his later years.

Larry was also a family man, part of a tight-knit clan that included his brother Russ and niece Amber Tamblyn, an actress known for The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Joan of Arcadia. Russ recently published a memoir, Dancing on the Edge, which was edited by Amber, further highlighting the Tamblyn family’s creative legacy.

A Legacy That Echoes Through Music and Culture

Larry Tamblyn’s contributions to music and culture are undeniable. From his early days as a solo artist to his groundbreaking work with The Standells, he helped shape the sound of 1960s rock and laid the groundwork for the punk movement that followed. “Dirty Water,” with its gritty charm and lasting association with Boston sports, ensures that his voice will continue to echo through stadiums and playlists for generations to come.

As fans, family, and fellow musicians mourn his loss, they also celebrate a life well-lived—one filled with creativity, resilience, and an unwavering love for music. Larry Tamblyn may be gone, but his incredible legacy, as his nephew Dennis put it, will live on.
