Former President Joe Biden Makes First Major Television Appearance Since Leaving Office, Joining ‘The View’ Co-Hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, and More for a Live Interview on ABC to Discuss His Legacy and the 2024 Election Fallout

In a significant return to the public eye, former President Joe Biden and former First Lady Dr. Jill Biden appeared live on ABC’s The View on May 8, 2025. This marked their first joint interview since departing the White House in January. The couple engaged in a candid discussion with co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, and others, delving into Biden’s presidential legacy, the aftermath of the 2024 election, and the current political climate under President Donald Trump’s second term.

Reflecting on a Tumultuous Election

Biden addressed the contentious 2024 election, during which he initially sought re-election but withdrew after a challenging debate performance and mounting pressure from within the Democratic Party. He endorsed then-Vice President Kamala Harris, who ultimately lost to Trump in the general election. In the interview, Biden defended the timing of his withdrawal, stating, “I don’t think it would have mattered. We left at a time when we had a good candidate, she’s fully funded.”

Assessing His Presidential Legacy

When discussing his time in office, Biden highlighted achievements such as maintaining NATO unity following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, he also acknowledged criticisms, particularly regarding the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Dr. Jill Biden emphasized her husband’s dedication, noting, “He started early with interviews and briefings, and it just keeps going.”

Mixed Reactions from Political Commentators

The appearance elicited varied responses. Alyssa Farah Griffin, co-host of The View and former Trump administration staffer, criticized Biden ahead of the interview, calling him “the messenger no Democrat wants to see out there right now.” She acknowledged his role in holding NATO together but pointed to the Afghanistan withdrawal as a significant blemish on his record.

Looking Ahead

The Bidens’ interview comes at a time when the Democratic Party is reassessing its direction and leadership. With upcoming gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, the party’s strategy and unity remain under scrutiny. Biden’s reemergence in the media spotlight may influence these dynamics as the party navigates its future in the post-Trump era.

As the nation reflects on the past and looks toward the future, Biden’s appearance on The View serves as a reminder of the complexities of political legacies and the ongoing evolution of American leadership.
