Kyle Shanahan haunted by one draft decision involving Patrick Mahomes
Adam Schefter explained how not drafting Mahomes ended up in Brock Purdy.
The 2024 NFL Draft is less than two months away and it’s important to remember what’s at stake. San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan would most likely already have a couiple of rings had he picked Patrick Mahomes back in 2017. Instead, Mahomes has defeated Shanahan’s team twice in the Super Bowl, and will most likely do the same should they once again meet for the championship game.
Shanahan has previously discussed his regret when it comes to not having drafted Mahomes. saying any coach around the NFL would feel the same way. “Anybody who had a chance to take Patrick Mahomes or Deshaun (Watson) who didn’t, I mean, everyone wishes we had a time machine,” Shanahan said. “Before I came here, I had a very good idea that we would be able to get a free-agent quarterback (Kirk Cousins) the next year, one that I knew we could win with. So you’re looking at these rookies … and no one at that time was considering those guys top-five picks, top-ten picks.”
Kyle Shanahan ended up getting Brock Purdy. Adam Schefter of ESPN recently explained on the “Pardon My Take” podcast how not drafting Mahomes ultimately ended up in Brock Purdy becoming a Niner. San Francisco drafted quarterback C.J. Beathard in 2017 before trading him to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 in return for the last overall pick in 2022, which turned out to be Purdy. “Mr. Irrelevant” managed to take Shanahan as far as Jimmy Garoppolo did in 2020, to a Super Bowl defeat against the quarterback he should have drafted.
