LAPD Investigates Apparent Double Homicide of ‘When Harry Met Sally’ Director Rob Reiner and Michele, With Son Nick Reiner Allegedly Responsible for Fatal Stabbings
Shocking Hollywood Tragedy: Rob Reiner and Wife Michele Singer Reiner Found Stabbed to Death in Brentwood Home – Son Nick Allegedly Involved
Los Angeles, December 15, 2025 – In a devastating turn of events that has stunned the entertainment world, legendary actor-director Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife of 36 years, Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found dead in their upscale Brentwood home on Sunday afternoon. Authorities are investigating the incident as an apparent double homicide, with multiple sources alleging that their son, Nick Reiner, was responsible for the fatal stabbings.

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical emergency call at the couple’s residence on the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue around 3:38 p.m. on December 14. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the bodies of a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman suffering from multiple stab wounds. The Los Angeles Police Department’s elite Robbery-Homicide Division quickly took over the case, confirming it as a homicide investigation.
While the LAPD has not officially identified the victims or named any suspects—stating late Sunday that no one is being sought or detained at this time—law enforcement sources and family statements have confirmed the deceased as Rob and Michele Reiner. Property records link the luxurious mansion directly to the couple.
Multiple reputable outlets, including People magazine, KTLA, and Extra, citing sources close to the family and investigation, report that the Reiners’ son, Nick Reiner, allegedly carried out the attack. Sources claim the bodies were discovered by the couple’s daughter, Romy Reiner, who arrived at the home shortly after the incident. Nick, one of the couple’s three children with Michele (along with Jake and Romy), reportedly fled the scene before authorities arrived.
Nick Reiner, born in 1993, has previously spoken publicly about his struggles with substance abuse. In a 2016 interview with People, he detailed entering rehab as a teenager and periods of homelessness, which later inspired the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, co-written by Nick and directed by his father. It remains unclear if these past issues played any role in the tragedy.
The Reiner family released a brief statement late Sunday: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed grief over the loss, calling Rob Reiner’s death “a devastating loss for our city and our country.” She praised his contributions to culture and advocacy for social justice. Similar tributes poured in from figures across Hollywood and politics, highlighting Reiner’s enduring legacy.
A Legendary Career Cut Short
Rob Reiner, son of comedy icon Carl Reiner (who passed in 2020) and actress Estelle Reiner, first rose to fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family, earning two Emmy Awards. Transitioning to directing in the 1980s, he helmed timeless classics including This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Stand By Me (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), When Harry Met Sally… (1989)—where he met Michele, a photographer on set—Misery (1990), and A Few Good Men (1992).
More recently, Reiner directed the long-awaited sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, released in September 2025, and remained an outspoken political activist.
Michele Singer Reiner, a talented photographer and producer, collaborated on several of her husband’s projects and was known for her warmth and support behind the scenes.
The couple, married since 1989, shared a life in the spotlight while raising their family away from much public scrutiny. Rob also had a daughter, actress Tracy Reiner, from his previous marriage to Penny Marshall (1971–1981).
Ongoing Investigation
LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton addressed the media Sunday night, emphasizing the early stage of the probe: “We’re going to try to speak to every family member that we can to get to the facts of this investigation.” No arrests have been announced, and authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation.
The Brentwood neighborhood, home to many celebrities, was cordoned off as detectives processed the scene into the evening. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will conduct autopsies to determine the exact cause of death.
This unimaginable family tragedy has left Hollywood in mourning, reminding the world of the fragile line between public triumph and private pain. As the investigation unfolds, the industry remembers Rob Reiner not just for his cinematic masterpieces, but for the humanity he infused into them.
Our thoughts are with the Reiner family during this profound loss.
