Britney Spears posted a sad note to Instagram on Saturday, informing her 41.1 million followers that she had miscarried.

The message was cross-posted to fiancé Sam Asghari’s Instagram as well. A little over a month ago she had announced that she and Asghari were expecting a baby following a trip to Maui.

Over a bleach-filtered image of tall grass, Spears wrote “it is with deepest sadness we have to announce that we have lost our miracle baby early in the pregnancy. This is a devastating time for any parent.”

She continued, “perhaps we should have waited to announce until we were further along however we were overly excited to share the good news.”

Beneath that she signed, in a different font, “Sam. &. Britney,” tagging him.

Alongside the post, she added a caption reading “we are grateful for what we have in the process of expanding our beautiful family.” After a heart emoji wrapped in a bow, she added, “thank you for your support.”

Asghari commented beneath that “we will have a miracle soon,” and included a heart emoji.

Paris Hilton was among the many who responded publicly, writing “I’m so sorry for your loss sis,” and “always here for you” with an assortment of emojis. Don Benjamin, Christina Perri, Brooke Lynn Hytes, and other notable pop stars and influencers were also in the comments with messages of support.

In recent days, Spears had been sharing pre-pregnancy photo and video “dumps,” as she called them, including many au naturel images plus one of these dance moves set to Otis Redding.

Spears, age 40, has been open about wanting a child with Asghari, age 28. During the trial to end her conservatorship, she testified that she was told she could not get married or have a baby, and that she was prevented from having her IUD removed. (Spears’s father, Jamie Spears, denied that claim.)

Spears has two sons with previous husband, Kevin Federline, who are both in their late teens. Spears and Federline divorced in 2007 and he had primary custody of the children.
