Chiefs and Buccaneers Unite in Emotional Tribute to Ed Oliver’s 2-Year-Old Son Before Preseason Kickoff
Football took a back seat to compassion before the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ preseason matchup as the NFL community came together to honor Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver and his family following the heartbreaking death of his young son.

The Chiefs and Buccaneers joined in a poignant show of respect before kickoff, with those inside the stadium standing in tribute to Oliver’s 2-year-old son. The emotional moment reflected the tight-knit nature of the NFL community, where rivalries are set aside when tragedy strikes.
Oliver is mourning the death of his young son, who died following a drowning incident at the football star’s home in Texas on June 28. The child was found unresponsive in a swimming pool and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The tragedy was publicly confirmed Saturday by Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane, who released a statement on behalf of the organization expressing condolences to Oliver and his family.
“It’s an unthinkable tragedy for any parent,” Beane said, while assuring Oliver and his family that the Bills would continue supporting them as they grieve.
Oliver, 28, has spent his entire NFL career with Buffalo after being selected ninth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. The defensive tackle is entering his eighth NFL season.
The touching tribute from the Chiefs and Buccaneers served as a reminder that, beyond the competition, the NFL is also a community of players, coaches, families and fans who come together during life’s most difficult moments.
For Oliver and his family, the focus now remains on grieving their devastating loss. The family has asked for privacy and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
