Travis Kelce Soaks Up Zarda BBQ Day as Chiefs Training Camp Tradition Rolls On

One day every summer at Kansas City Chiefs training camp, the familiar scent of hickory smoke drifts across the practice fields in St. Joseph, Missouri. For Travis Kelce, that aroma signals one of the highlights of the year.

The tight end has spoken openly on the New Heights podcast about how much he looks forward to Zarda BBQ Day. Players can smell the barbecue while still on the field, and once the meal arrives, the tables get loaded with sauce. “They just throw the barbecue sauce on every table… you just douse that stuff with it… and it slaps,” Kelce has said.

This year marked Zarda’s 38th consecutive season feeding the Chiefs at camp. By the end of the day, the local barbecue institution had served more than 200 players, coaches, and staff. The massive spread included 1,440 hot honey wings (a new addition), 80 slabs of ribs, 110 pounds of burnt ends, 100 pounds of pulled pork, 40 pounds of turkey, 12 gallons of beans, and 12 gallons of cheesy potato bake.

Zarda shared behind-the-scenes photos of the operation, showing the sheer volume of food required to fuel an NFL team. One image reached back to 2014, capturing a younger Travis Kelce posing with Zarda COO Terry Hyer—a reminder of how long both the player and the partnership have been part of Chiefs culture.

While the official photos focused on the meal itself, the day fits the broader atmosphere of training camp, where Kelce has long been known for making time for fans. In recent days at camp he has stayed after practice to sign autographs, pose for photos, and create memorable moments for young supporters, some of whom have left in tears of excitement after meeting him and teammates like Patrick Mahomes.

The combination of a beloved food tradition and Kelce’s approachable presence helps turn an ordinary mid-camp day into something that feels special for players and the Chiefs Kingdom alike. Zarda has said it simply loves feeding the team, and the players clearly return the appreciation.

For a franchise built on continuity and culture, small rituals like Zarda BBQ Day matter. The smoke, the sauce, the shared meal, and the chance for stars like Kelce to connect with fans all reinforce the same idea: some traditions stick around because they still feel good more than three decades later.
