Trump Says U.S. Destroyers Came Under Fire in Strait of Hormuz, Confirms Death of 5 American Service Members

President Donald Trump announced Friday that three American Navy destroyers came under direct missile and drone attack while transiting through the Strait of Hormuz, describing the confrontation as one of the most serious military escalations yet in the growing crisis involving Iran.

In a statement posted to Truth Social, Trump said the destroyers moved “very successfully” through the strategically vital waterway despite coming under heavy fire during the operation.

“Missiles were shot at our Destroyers,” Trump wrote. “They were easily knocked down. Likewise, drones came, and were incinerated while in the air — but we lost 5 good men.”

The president did not immediately identify the fallen service members or specify which naval vessels were involved, but the announcement sent shockwaves through Washington and across global markets as fears of a wider regional conflict intensified.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, with nearly a fifth of global petroleum shipments passing through the narrow corridor. Any military confrontation in the area is closely watched by world leaders and financial markets alike.

According to early reports, U.S. naval forces detected incoming threats shortly after entering the strait. Defense systems aboard the destroyers reportedly intercepted multiple missiles before impact, while American forces also neutralized several approaching drones in what officials described as a “rapid defensive engagement.”

Trump praised the response of U.S. forces, calling the operation “an incredible display of American strength and precision,” while also mourning the loss of the five service members killed during the confrontation.

The White House has not yet confirmed whether retaliatory action against Iranian military assets is being considered, though Pentagon officials are expected to brief reporters later Friday.

The incident comes amid soaring tensions between Washington and Tehran following weeks of military buildups, naval deployments, and increasingly hostile rhetoric from both sides. International leaders are now urging restraint amid fears that further escalation could spiral into a broader regional war.

Iranian officials have not officially responded to Trump’s claims as of Friday evening.
