WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump greeted NTT IndyCar Series drivers on the paddock Sunday afternoon ahead of the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix, the first professional open-wheel race ever held on the streets of the nation’s capital.
The couple posed for photos and exchanged handshakes with competitors as preparations intensified for the 250-mile street race celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. Social media posts and live footage captured the first couple interacting with drivers near the race cars against the backdrop of Washington, D.C.’s iconic landmarks.
The Freedom 250 Grand Prix features a 1.7-mile temporary circuit with seven turns that winds past the U.S. Capitol, along Pennsylvania Avenue, and around portions of the National Mall. Drivers are scheduled to complete 147 laps at speeds approaching 180–200 mph. The event forms a centerpiece of the year’s America 250 commemorations.
President Trump, who signed an executive order earlier this year to facilitate the race, was also expected to take a ceremonial lap of honor in the presidential limousine known as “The Beast” and wave the green flag to start the main event. First Lady Melania Trump joined him for the pre-race activities and was scheduled to watch from the stands.
The greeting continues a series of high-profile engagements between the White House and IndyCar. Trump previously hosted drivers and executives at the White House in July for a promotional showcase that included a live pit-stop demonstration. Days before the race weekend, Melania Trump appeared at a Rose Garden event with several drivers in support of her Fostering the Future initiative, which received a joint donation from IndyCar and FOX Sports.
Organizers, led by Penske Corporation, described the weekend as a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle blending American motorsport tradition with national landmarks. Free general-admission tickets were distributed by lottery, drawing large crowds to the temporary grandstands.
