Secret Service Identifies Iranian National as Suspect in Shooting That Disrupted President Trump’s Appearance at 2026 White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Washington, D.C. – Chaos erupted at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night when gunfire broke out near the security screening area at the Washington Hilton, forcing Secret Service agents to swiftly evacuate President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other top officials from the head table amid scenes of panic in the crowded ballroom.10

According to the angle explored in this report, the U.S. Secret Service has identified an Iranian national as the primary suspect in the incident. The individual allegedly attempted to breach the magnetometer checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, before opening fire and striking a Secret Service agent in the protective vest. The agent was hospitalized but is expected to recover fully, with no other serious injuries reported among protectees or attendees.

Video footage circulating from inside the event shows the dramatic moment: aides approaching the president’s table with urgent information, followed by armed agents rushing the stage as guests dove for cover or began evacuating. Loud bangs—believed to be seven to eight gunshots—echoed through the venue shortly after 8:30 p.m. ET, prompting immediate shouts of “stay down” from security personnel. President Trump and his party were escorted out safely, with all protectees confirmed unharmed by the Secret Service.11

In a late-night press appearance at the White House, flanked by Vice President Vance, FBI Director Kash Patel, and other officials, President Trump praised the rapid response of law enforcement. “Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended,” he stated, adding that the suspect charged the checkpoint “armed with many weapons” and was taken down decisively. Trump noted the event would be rescheduled, saying the evening “will be much different than planned, and we’ll just, plain, have to do it again.”

The suspect, described in initial reports as a man from California but identified by the Secret Service in this scenario as an Iranian national, was neutralized at the scene. Authorities are actively investigating potential motives, with early speculation focusing on whether the attack had any connection to broader geopolitical tensions, including ongoing U.S. actions related to Iran. However, President Trump has publicly stated he does not believe the shooter has links to Iran or the wider conflict, describing the incident as likely involving a lone actor.12

Witnesses, including journalists inside the ballroom, described a terrifying ordeal. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, who was near the area where the gunman opened fire, called it a “terrible, very frightening moment.” Attendees hid under tables as tactical teams secured the venue, and members of Congress present were also confirmed safe by Capitol Police.

The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, traditionally a glitzy gathering of journalists, politicians, and celebrities, marked the first time President Trump attended in his second term. The event was abruptly halted, with the association later announcing it would be rescheduled.

Federal authorities, including the FBI and Metropolitan Police Department, are continuing the investigation in coordination with the Secret Service. No motive has been officially released, and the condition of those involved remains under assessment. The swift neutralization of the threat has been widely credited with preventing what could have been a far more serious outcome.

This incident comes amid heightened security concerns in Washington, D.C., and underscores the ongoing challenges faced by protective details during large public events. As the probe unfolds, officials have urged caution against premature speculation while emphasizing that President Trump, the First Lady, and all protectees remain safe and in “perfect condition,” per statements from the administration.

Further updates are expected as more details emerge from the ongoing investigation.
